My phone alarm is going off and I struggle to find it. The screen beams ‘5am’…on a Saturday.
After shooting the first part of their engagement pictures, JP explained that he was going to take us for a little hike the following morning so we could catch the sunrise and start our day of shooting. At first I was thinking, grrrreaaat. I will be the dork on the evening news, “Photographer Dies in Tragic Hiking Accident; Wore Flip Flops, Tried to Save Camera.” Yes, I forgot my trusty hiking boots that trip and sported my flips. Ya know, because I always have hiking shoes on me in case of a last-minute hike…in Houston. Oh, I’m just giving them a hard time 🙂 JP’s idea was a great way to start our day, albeit a little early; but the sun was gorgeous and I now have a new appreciation for shooting at 5:45 in the morning. Anyone willing to move their session up?? Hehe. We ran into some interesting characters along the way too, which made getting up early even better. My favorite? A lady and her shirtless son, we will call him Mowgli, appeared from the brush to greet the sun with us, burning a decent stash of incense. I am pretty sure it was frankincense, or maybe sandalwood…
I really do love the photos we were able to get up there on that hilltop and appreciate JP and Megan thinking outside the box. The view was so beautiful and allowed us to observe the city from a whole new perspective.
Once the sun was a little higher in the sky, the whole area had a gorgeous hue. Of course I tried to capitalize on that opportunity as much as I could!
After we found our way back down to the car, it was time for a cup of coffee, a quick outfit change, and some shooting around downtown. Let me preface by saying that Austin, being as quirky {some may say weird} as it is, possesses some of the friggin’ coolest places to shoot. Where else can you find walls with such kick-butt murals, old vintage cars, and a cupcake trailer?!
I feel so unbelievably lucky to have been able to shoot this great couple in such a fun place, and would do it all over again if I could — even the 5am part! After spending a few days in Austin and its suburbs, I was seriously ready to move there and set up shop 🙂 Don’t worry though — husbands are good at offering reality checks, rather quickly I might add.
Thanks again, Megan and JP! We had a wonderful time with you guys and I cannot wait to come visit again soon. You are both so much fun and I am thankful that you allowed me to capture this special time.
